The Cleveland Indians joined Major League Baseball in 1889 with legendary pitcher Cy Young, after which the award with the same name was instigated. Even with Young, the winningest pitcher in baseball history, the Indians struggled in the playoffs. In 1901, with the uniting of the American and National Leagues, the Cleveland Indians joined the American League, changed their name to the "Bronchos," and had their first winning season in 1902. Another name change occurred in 1905, to the "Naps," in honor of their best player Napoleon Lajoie. In 1915, the name changed back to the Indians, which would be the final name for the team up to present day. The Indians play at the Progressive Field commonly known to locals as "The Jake" because of the original owners, the Jacobs. The Cleveland Indians' total franchise triumphs include two World Series Championships, five American League pennants, four LCS appearances, and seven division titles.
The Cleveland Indians have started off this season slowly with a 30-35 record, putting them in 3rd place in the American League Central division. The Indians are led by All-Stars Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez, and Paul Byrd. Grady Sizemore has been in the league for 3 years and was last year's Gold Glove Award winner. Even with all this talent, the Indians are off to a relatively slow start. Look for a midseason turnaround for this team to get back into playoff contention as ticket sales are low right now but will soar as the post-season gets nearer and nearer.
